Two Islands, One Gong: Celebrating 10 years of Gamelan in Buffalo

Two islands. One gong. Ten years. On May 24, Nusantara Arts celebrates a decade of gamelan in Buffalo with Two Islands, One Gong a matinee concert bringing together the bronze orchestras of Java and Bali, plus Balinese dance, live at Asbury Hall!

It started with a handbuilt iron gamelan from Karagan village in Solo, Central Java rough-hewn, well-loved, and tuned to its own standard. Ten years later, Buffalo has two full bronze gamelan ensembles, one Javanese and one Balinese, and a community of musicians, dancers, and teaching artists that has made this one of the most unlikely homes for Indonesian performing arts in North America.
