The father of the public park movement in America, Frederick Law Olmsted (FLO) was brought to Buffalo in 1868 for his far-sighted belief that parks, parkways, and residential communities were essential social institutions with great humanistic appeal. With his partner, Calvert Vaux, he left an indelible mark on our city that is still, today, the most complete parks and parkway system in the USA. This tour touches everything that Olmsted and his firm accomplished in Buffalo as well as some areas that were designed but not implemented.
The Tour de Olmsted is basically a bike tour of Buffalo highlights. It is the most comprehensive bike tour offered by Explore Buffalo. Starting and ending at the Richardson Hotel, the route is approximately 37 miles and takes in the entirety of the City and a majority of its neighborhoods as well as downtown, Canalside and the Outer Harbor. This tour will be approximately 5 hours in length. Please see the descriptions of Tour de Olmsted North and Tour de Olmsted South to find details of where this combined tour goes.
Please note that this is a tour for experienced and in-shape cyclists who can keep a 14-16 mph pace. Participants will be “in the saddle” for 3 hours. There are five significant hills (OK, overpasses) and several smaller but still challenging hills. It is an excellent opportunity for e-bike enthusiasts There is significant on-street bike lane and in-traffic riding involved, and many of the streets are in rough condition.
