Step behind the scenes at two of Buffalo’s most inspiring community organizations Buffalo Equestrian Center and Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center where the bond between humans and horses creates opportunities for connection, growth, and healing.

At the Buffalo Equestrian Center, nestled within the city, you will experience a unique urban stable that brings horseback riding, horsemanship, and equine care to riders of all backgrounds. The Buffalo Equestrian Center was built in 1922 by a group of local businessmen who formed The Riding Reality Shareholder Corporation. At that time it was called The Saddle and Bridle Club, and was used as a polo facility. Harvey Horton, a local architect, designed the facility. The building is unique, not only to Buffalo, but to the entire United States. The English Tudor and gothic style building has a lounge in the center with a large window overlooking the indoor arena. One of only three city based indoor riding arenas in the United States, it is also one of the largest in the country. It has 160 stalls.

Next, explore the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center, where horses play a powerful role in improving lives. Through adaptive riding programs, individuals with physical, developmental, and emotional challenges gain confidence, strength, and independence. “Special things happen when children and horses are brought together. There is a unique bond between horses and people that can be particularly meaningful to children with disabilities. Riding programs provide a relaxing, non-academic environment in which children can interact with adults and peers and more importantly with their horse.”

This tour is approximately ninety minutes in length. The tour is not handicapped accessible. Please do not wear sandals or open-toed footwear. The Buffalo Equestrian Center is located at 950 Amherst Street near Delaware Avenue. Parking is available on site.
