The father of the public park movement in America, Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. (FLO) was brought to Buffalo in 1867 for his far-sighted belief that parks, parkways, and residential communities were essential social institutions with great humanistic appeal. With his partner, Calvert Vaux, he left an indelible mark on our city that is still the most complete Olmsted parks and parkway system in the USA. This tour touches much of what FLO and his firm accomplished in Buffalo as well as areas that have yet to be re-captured.
Our three-hour tour begins on the Richardson-Olmsted Campus. We examine Delaware, Martin Luther King, and Front parks. In addition, we travel his parkways, and circles, examine public and private landscapes, and experience pocket parks with remaining artifacts. The tour covers multiple Buffalo neighborhoods so there will be discussion of architectural highlights along the way.
Meet at the main entrance of the Richardson Hotel, which is on the north side of the building, facing Buffalo State University – not the Forest Avenue side of the building. Parking is available in the Richardson Hotel parking lot – please use the lot circled in red on the map in your confirmation email. When facing the hotel’s main entrance, this is two parking lots to the right. If arriving early, you are welcome to check out the Lipsey Architecture Center space on the first level of the Richardson Hotel which details the history of the Richardson-Olmsted Campus as well as providing an overview of Buffalo architecture.
There is currently no wheelchair access onto the bus.
