Explore Buffalo and the Jewish Buffalo History Center partnered to offer a tour of a unique element of Jewish Buffalo history: nearly a dozen Jewish cemeteries along Pine Ridge Road. Visiting these cemeteries offers visitors glimpses into three centuries of Buffalo’s Jewish community. You will also learn about the pursuit of national recognition of one of the cemeteries, and the Stones of Remembrance project.
This tour shares many stories, including those of Jewish immigrants coming to Buffalo. The monuments found in these cemeteries memorialize many individuals – some names are well-known far beyond Buffalo, while others have purely local roots. Yet, all were individuals with remarkable lives.
As the 90-minute tour progresses through the cemeteries, some of the symbolism and design features found within the cemeteries & both on individual monuments, as well as of the cemeteries themselves & will be pointed out.
This tour begins at the entrance of Holy Order of the Living Cemetery on Pine Ridge Heritage Boulevard. (Use 580 Pine Ridge Heritage Boulevard, Buffalo, NY 14225 for GPS – there are no street number markers). There is a small beige brick building on the west side of Pine Ridge Heritage Boulevard where the tour will gather. Parking is available along the side of Pine Ridge Heritage Boulevard. This tour is approximately one mile in length.
