Intro to Javanese Gamelan

Join Buffalo’s only Javanese gamelan program at Nusantara Arts completely free! This six-week beginner series invites you to explore a new hobby through hands-on, community-centered music making in a welcoming and inclusive environment. No experience is needed just curiosity and a willingness to try something new.

Led in a traditional, community-oriented style, classes focus on learning multiple instruments while building a shared understanding of this rich musical tradition. Participants will explore the fundamentals of gamelan, including instrument basics, musical structure, and cultural context, while developing listening and playing skills together.

You’ll learn:

• Introduction to gamelan instruments and how they work

• Cultural context of gamelan, including connections to dance and wayang

• Proper mallet technique and how to play multiple instruments

• How to listen and play within a gamelan ensemble

• Structure of gamelan compositions

• Basics of elaborating parts on instruments like peking and bonang
