Historic Hairwork Workshop at Genesee Country Village & Museum explores the history and craftsmanship of Victorian hairwork, an art form rooted in love, remembrance, and personal connection.
Led by hairwork artist and expert Susan Doran, the workshop begins with a presentation introducing the cultural significance, techniques, and materials associated with 19th-century hair art. Participants will then prepare hair for use in their project and learn traditional methods inspired by historic artisans.
Guests will have the opportunity to create either a hair-woven mini pendant or a palette-work framed memento. Materials, including a small frame and practice hair, will be provided. Those who wish to personalize their piece may bring a lock of hair measuring 3&6 inches in length, clean and dry, and stored in an envelope or baggie.
This workshop is free, but advance registration is required. Space is limited. The workshop will take place in the John L. Wehle Gallery.
