The Western New York Book Arts Center Presents CINDY SUFFOLETTO
BUFFALO, NY The Western New York Book Arts Center is proud to present Cindy Suffoletto, an exhibition of the work of Buffalo-born artist Cindy Suffoletto (1962&2012).
An opening reception, free and open to the public, will be held at the WNY Book Arts Center, 468 Washington Street, Buffalo, NY 14203, on Friday, January 30, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The exhibition will be on view January 30 through February 21, 2026.
Cindy Suffoletto studied art at Buffalo State College, emerging into Buffalo’s vibrant avant-garde art scene in the early 1980s. Her practice spanned sculpture, mixed-media collage, and works on paper. After establishing herself locally, Suffoletto moved to New York City with her partner, artist Andrew Topolski. Together they were part of a wave of Western New York artists who relocated their practices to the center of the art world. This expatriate circle included Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Charles Clough, and many others.
Topolski’s studio practice kept the pair in New York throughout the 1990s until, following the events of September 11, 2001, they relocated to the Catskills. Drawing influence and materials from her Upstate New York environment, Suffoletto returned to an active studio practice after Topolski’s passing in 2008. Working primarily with oils and mixed media, she produced a deeply personal body of work during the brief period between his death and her own, just shy of her 50th birthday.
This exhibition presents a rare opportunity to view work that Suffoletto shared only privately with family and close friends. The exhibition offers a chance to reflect on the journey many artists begin in Western New York, and the role creativity plays in our lives within both private and public spheres.
A closing reception and public discussion will take place on Saturday, February 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The program will feature a conversation between Nancy Weekly, Scholar at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, and Aidan Ryan, author of I Am Here You Are Not I Love You: Andrew Topolski, Cindy Suffoletto, and Their Life in the Arts. This event is free and open to the public.
