The Place
Buffalo, NY 14222
The Place occupies a building constructed in the late 1870s, when the surrounding Elmwood Village was still semi-rural. First operated as a saloon by Jacob Beier, it later passed through a few hands before Bernie Flynn renamed it The Place in 1941, establishing its famed Thinnie sandwiches and Tom & Jerry holiday tradition. Edward “Buddy” Flynn and his nephew, Ken Moriarity, held on to these customs and the restaurant’s position in the Elmwood community. In 2015, Jay McCarthy, with partners Kevin and Betty Brinkworth, came together to carry the institution forward. Today, The Place remains decidedly itself, woven into the daily life of the Elmwood Village for over a century.
