Nominee Categories and Selection Process
The 2026 James Beard nomination committee developed its slate of Erie County nominees through two months of shared and individual work. Members studied past nominees from the area to better understand what earned the Foundation’s attention, then weighed today’s local dining scene against the Foundation’s award criteria, values and impact statement, debating each candidate at length.
Individually, members read reviews, talked with industry members, compared menus to past winners here and elsewhere, and revisited some restaurants for a refreshed look. That research fed three interspersed rounds of anonymous digital voting, producing a set of nominees that meet the criteria and can hold their own against other nominees from across the nation.
